The Cube One Clearly a ripoff of mobiBlu s Cube Nextar s MA BL cube shape will certainly garner more curious onlookers than an iPod. It even includes an FM tuner and a voice recorder. Sure it only holds MB of tunes but what do you want for the price of a movie ticket . . The Headphone One These folding USB headphones do one better than just providing you with music they also take away that annoying headphone cord. With controls for volume and track skipping on one of the earpieces these phones are your MP player. provided you supply an SD card to hold music. But even when you factor in that cost it s still a better deal than the Shuffle. . . The Pink One Do you like pink Coby s MP C Clip MP player is all about catering to girlish stereotypes with its pink paint job listed first and foremost in its list of features. Like omigawd I have to have that The GB of memory holds as much as the Shuffle but is compatible with WMAs and apparently comes with professional stereo headphones. I m convinced. . . The Curvy One Sony s Bean MP player doesn t have any hard edges to it theoretically making it more comfortable to hold than most. The battery life isn t too shabby either rated at a respectable hours. Plus the direct USB connection means you ll have one less cable cluttering up your house. Oh and it s compatible with Sony s ATRAC format not that anyone cares. . . The Cool Backlight One This player from Sansa is called the Clip but what really makes it stand out is the blue backlight behind the control dial. The Clip has a pretty slick design for sure also sporting a multiple line screen not something you ll find on the Shuffle. It has all those other non iPod perks too an FM tuner a voice recorder easy file storage. Factor in the good reviews and the Clip may be the best value for your money. . . The Flash Drive One Also well reviewed SanDisk s Sansa Express doesn t have a clip but it s super easy to connect to your PC thanks to its USB drive like design. Well a USB drive circa . There s GB of onboard memory just like the Shuffle has but the microSD slot lets you pump that up even further. . . The Chocolate One OK Brando s Chocolate MP player isn t exactly edible but its shell is shaped so much like a candy bar that it earned the Chocolate label. At least that s my theory. Otherwise there isn t much rationale for the name but do you really care when the delicious insides of this thing can hold a hearty GB for so cheap . The Bronze One Kind of resembling a Zippo lighter Nextar s MA T BE player is compatible with formats apenty MP MP MP WMA WMV ASF and WAV. Too bad it s only got MB but hey the shiny bronze finish is certainly a plus That and possibly the included armband still a rarity . . . The Creative Zen One One of the perennial challengers to Apple s dominance over the MP player market is Creative and the company s Zen Stone Plus seemingly has the goods to one up the Shuffle. First it has GB of memory onboard. Then there s the FM tuner voice recorder and screen. Last that smooth glossy finish has to count for something. If you can live without a clip this player could be golden. . . The AAA Battery Powered One If repeatedly charging up MP players by plugging them into USB ports annoys the hell out of you the Philips SA is perfect for you. Running on a single AAA battery and holding a respectable GB the sleek black player will keep you rocking for hours. When the time s up just slip in another battery. We reckoned that it would be nice for Apple to also consider dropping the price on its lower end players as well. It seems as though Apple has answered our wish with at least one product line the iPod shuffle. Apple today dropped the price of its GB iPod shuffle from to a more manageable . The price cut is sure to give sales of the tiny display less player a boost. In addition to the price cut for the GB iPod shuffle Apple also introduced a new GB model for a low . Pricing the new GB iPod shuffle under the previous price point for the GB model is a great move on Apple s part and is sure to anger a few customers who purchased shuffles in recent months. At just the iPod shuffle is the most affordable iPod ever said Apple VP of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing Greg Joswiak. The new GB model lets music lovers bring even more songs everywhere they go in the impossibly small iPod shuffle. By ebakke on Rating By ebakke on PM Rating Why does everyone insist on pointing out that Apple isn t the low price leader That isn t their strategy and it never has been. Of course there are lower priced players that isn t a market Apple is trying to take. By clovell on Rating By clovell on PM Rating From where Parent the ipod loses out on every feature matrix table By Techno Pride on Rating By Techno Pride on PM Rating You know how tech magazines like to use feature matrix tables to compare products. You have a feature you get a tick. The product with the most ticks win or at least it s supposed to. I ve a nd gen Nano color screen and a Sony player FM radio but I still go with the st gen Shuffle most of the time. Because it s plenty easy to use and sounds pretty good. Sometimes the number of ticks doesn t matter. Hidden News By Operandi on Rating By Operandi on AM Rating Looks more like free publicity for apple to me. Hidden RE News By eye smite on Rating By eye smite on AM Rating I ve honestly never understood the craze behind the ipod. Is it an in crowd thing or a sheep no offense intended type situation I ve got so many other ways to carry mp s with me and listen to them I ve never felt a need to get an ipod or like device God knows there s enough copy cats of it out there. Parent Hidden RE News By oab on Rating By oab on AM Rating When the iPod first came out and was available for PC it was just about the only media player that could hold more than songs and didn t have quadrillion buttons on it. The Creative Nomad was out at about the same time as the iPod and well . the iPod was a better player out of the box. Now since then lots of other players better players have come out to try and compete with the iPod. Less expensive more features etc. But Apples early lead despite late entry plus a series of great advertisements won them a solid market by the time the g was released. So despite that you are able to play songs on your MP phone or your windows mobile PDA the iPod was better than both when it was released. It was much much easier to use it was stylish attractive and marketed to just the right segment in a way that would offer universal appeal. Having said all that you don t NEED an iPod anymore lots of other players that are better my Creative Zen gb is better than the comparable nano in everything except for the bundled software and the user interface something which still counts a lot with non technical consumers. Parent Hidden RE News By themadmilkman on Rating By themadmilkman on AM Rating quote Having said all that you don t NEED an iPod anymore lots of other players that are better my Creative Zen gb is better than the comparable nano in everything except for the bundled software and the user interface something which still counts a lot with non technical consumers. Tell me exactly why a technical user has to put up with a poor UI and a good UI only counts for non technical consumers Parent Hidden RE News By xsilver on Rating By xsilver on AM Rating a technical user can put up with a poor UI because its balanced out by other redeeming features. Very specific advanced or even hard to use but cool features. Non technical consumers however have no interest in this kind of stuff so a bad UI is basically going to spell doom Parent RE News By oab on Rating By oab on PM Rating Like the ability to play divx files without conversion which the Creative player can do and an iPod can t. Example Zencasts these are just podcasts Putting non zencast podcasts under the regular music menu but it puts zencasts under the video menu. Why not just have a menu called Zencasts The installer gives me a seperate program called zencast organizer anyway why not just brand ALL podcasts it fetches as zencasts Another example Divx videos. yes it plays them but unless you just copy the files manually to the device it tries to covert them all to WMV using one of the SLOWEST conversion programs I ve ever seen it s almost real time for SINGLE PASS ENCODING . They work just fine as long as you don t use the programs synch utility. Two examples of which a non technical user would be quite confused about where there files had gone why it was converting something that it should play already. Parent Hidden RE News By kmmatney on Rating By kmmatney on AM Rating When I demoed MP players about a year ago I had BestBuy gift cards so my choices were limited I thought the nano was the best of the bunch. Back then Creative and Microsoft didn t have any competitive flash based offerings so the coice was between the GB Sansa and GB nano. The Sansa felt cheap plastic disk spinner so went with the Nano as I think most people would who were in my position. The Nano was the best flash based player I could get. Parent Hidden RE News By kmmatney on Rating By kmmatney on AM Rating I can also say that I ll probably hooked into Apple for some time. When ripping my CD collection to Itunes I used AAC as the format. If I switched now I d have to re rip all my CDs or convert everything with some quality loss. Parent RE News By oab on Rating By oab on PM Rating Or just get a player that plays AAC files such as any modern Creative player like the credit card sized Zen Parent RE News By Hare on Rating By Hare on PM Rating The iTunes store also had an impact. Parent Hidden RE News By pomaikai on Rating By pomaikai on AM Rating Having had an ipod the great thing about it is its user interface. It is unmatched and so simple to use. I currently have a zune ipod hard drive crashed after about months and even though it is has so much better functionality I miss the ipod wheel. It was really easier to use. After my ipod broke I was not gonna buy another hard drive based MP player but I could not pass up a GB zune for . Parent Hidden RE News By michal on Rating By michal on AM Rating yes the wheel is nice. I got used to my zune. That being said the itouch and iphone are both more zune like in their controls then they are ipod like. when the ipod came out it was amazingly simple. now its just going of its pervious reputation. Parent RE News By Wightout on Rating By Wightout on PM Rating The itouch is kinda lousy for an mp device. Horrible for car use as you have to wake it up every time you want to simply skip one song. It is workable as an MP player but the classic is defiantly a better player. I have both the touch and the classic lol like coke. le sigh . The touch is amazing for web use email writing in contacts taking quick notes keeping a calendar up to date and watching podcasts though they really need to make it so you can manage your podcasts straight from the device once you are online . The classic is simple. though more and more features are being added. I just want a player that will play audio and only audio easily and at a relatively high capacity. So should I ever find a need to go out and buy another device it will most likely not be something from apple unless they change their ways. I don t care about movies on the nano. Who in their right mind does as of right now apple lacks a good running buddy that has a screen IMO. The nano in its previous state was a much better device. Just my .
